The INPEX led Abadi LNG project in Indonesia has taken a major step forward after recently being granted environmental approval by the Indonesian government marking a critical milestone for one of Southeast Asia’s most significant liquefied natural gas developments. The approval, based on a comprehensive Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (known locally as AMDAL), authorizes the project’s core elements from offshore development drilling to onshore liquefaction facilities, clearing a key regulatory hurdle as the venture advances through its engineering and design stages.
Located in the Masela block off eastern Indonesia, approximately 180 km southwest of the Tanimbar Islands in Maluku, the Abadi LNG project is being developed by a joint venture led by INPEX Masela (with a 65 % interest), alongside Indonesian state-owned PT Pertamina Hulu Energi Masela and Malaysian firm PETRONAS Masela.
The environmental approval paves the way for preparatory work at the project site and supports ongoing Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) activities for both offshore and onshore facilities. It covers all major components necessary for development, including production facilities, processing infrastructure and a liquefied natural gas plant, crucial work that will define the technical specifications and commercial basis ahead of a Final Investment Decision (FID) expected in the coming years.
Once fully developed, Abadi LNG is expected to produce about 9.5 million tonnes of LNG per year, alongside pipeline natural gas and 35,000 barrels of condensate per day that could contribute meaningfully to energy security in Indonesia, Japan and other Asian markets while helping diversify gas supplies in the region.
A distinctive feature of the project is its commitment to incorporating carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology as part of the development plan, reflecting broader environmental and decarbonization ambitions. This CCS integration aims to capture carbon dioxide emissions generated during gas production, reducing the project’s carbon footprint in line with Indonesia’s pledge to reach net zero emissions by 2060 and global energy transition goals.
The Abadi LNG development, with its strategic scale and technological components, is seen as a flagship for sustainable hydrocarbon projects in the region. Approval of its environmental assessment underscores both the Indonesian government’s regulatory oversight and its support for responsibly developed energy infrastructure that balances economic growth with environmental stewardship.
This environmental green light not only unlocks on-the-ground preparations but also signals investor and stakeholder confidence as INPEX and its partners move toward full construction and eventual production, anticipated in the early 2030s.
