Shell U.K. Ltd has taken the decision to remove the Curlew FPSO, and decommission its associated subsea infrastructure.

The Curlew oil and gas offshore facility is situated in the Central North Sea in the United Kingdom continental shelf. It is located approximately 210km east of the Aberdeenshire coastline, Scotland, and 55km west of the UK/Norway median line, in a water depth of 93m. The facility consists of a central processing Floating Production, Storage and Offloading vessel, with three subsea field tie-backs, and is connected into the Fulmar pipeline for gas export to St. Fergus onshore facility.

Decommissioning Programme

Shell U.K. Ltd submitted a draft Decommissioning Programme (DP) for Curlew to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) in June 2018. In accordance with the provisions of the Petroleum Act 1998, for consideration by the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), it is a requirement of the Act that interested parties be consulted on such decommissioning proposals.

Public Consultation on the Curlew DP opened on 17June 2018, and closed on 18 July 2018. Following Public Consultation, the DP has now been approved by BEIS.

COSCO SHIPPING Specialized performed Float-on and Load-in of the Curlew FPSO
November 16, 2022

After more than a year of planning and working closely with our client AF Offshore Decom, COSCO SHIPPING Specialized’s M/V Xin Guang Hua, safely performed the Float-on and Load-in operation of the 20,300mt Curlew FPSO in early November together with Buksér og Berging and Mammoet. Setting a New world record for the largest/heaviest SPMT operation, utilizing 748 Axle lines. The 235 meter long FPSO will now be further dismantled and recycled at AF Environmental Base Vats in Rogaland, Norway.

Below are noted from AF Gruppen, the contractor awarded for the dismantling program:

💪 Record assignments at Vats. The largest recycling assignment of its kind is now underway at AF Environmental Base Vats.

♻️ The 235-metre production vessel, the Curlew FPSO, will be cut, cleaned and sorted at source. This is the first time a production vessel will be recycled in Norway.

🚢 Last week, the ship was lifted ashore in the largest single loading of a production vessel carried out in this way. The method used, float over – float-in, has never been used on such a large scale anywhere in the world.

😮 A rather spectacular operation, not least given the size of the vessel. After AF Offshore Decom has carried out preparatory work, the 235-metre-long ship weighs 21,000 tonnes.

👷 The task of sorting offshore installations and ships is circular economy in practice. Here, Norwegian industry and engineering expertise have developed solutions that are at the forefront internationally.

🔪 Most of the material from the production vessel is utilised as raw material in new production. The steel is used as rebar in new buildings. Over 95 percent of the ship is recycled.

☺️ The project has involved many different academic communities and good partners such as Buksér og Berging AS, Mammoet Norway – SPMT and COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Transport and A. Olufsen Ship & Offshore AS.
