PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) has continued to expand its fleet over the last 4 years. By 2025, PIS is targeted to have a fleet of 130 tankers.

"The expansion of the tanker fleet is carried out to strengthen energy distribution and national energy security, as well as the companys expansion in the global market for non-captive markets," said Muh. Aryomekka Firdaus, PIS Corporate Secretary, on Monday (16/10).

He explained, only from 2019 to September 2023, PIS records the addition of 11 tanker fleets, including Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) vessels of “Pertamina Pride” and “Pertamina Prime” which were built independently. The inauguration of the two vessels was attended by Minister of Indonesian State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), Erick Thohir. "The VLCC ships are listed among the worlds largest ships, and already have sailed in several countries since operating in 2021," expressed Aryomekka encouragingly.

In early 2023, PIS also added its range of giant ships by the acquisition of Pertamina Gas Amaryllis, a Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC), the worlds largest environmentally friendly gas ship.

“Pertamina Gas Amaryllis is the first dual-fuel tanker owned by Indonesia and a form of PIS’ commitment to support the governments energy transition program,” said Aryomekka.

PIS’ fleet expansion, according to Aryomekka, not only contributes to Pertamina Group’s growth, but also aligns with SOE Minister Erick Thohirs mandate to “Go Global” as the new fleet are encouraged to meet the international standards to sail overseas. As of now, PIS fleet has sailed in 26 international routes.

"Indonesia Go Global is the vision of BUMN. We believe, we have the potential to grow in the international business landscape, and contribute significantly to Indonesias economic growth," said Erick.

Accordingly, PIS now owns 97 vessels and targets 130 vessels in 2025. The addition since 2019 includes:
  • VLCC Ships: Pertamina Pride and Pertamina Prime (2021);
  • VLGC Ship: Pertamina Gas Amaryllis (2023);
  • Medium Tanker/MT Ships: MT Pangalengan (2019), MT Panjang (2019), MT Pangrango (2019), PIS Precious (2019), PIS Sumatra (2023);
  • Small Gas Carrier: AntasenGas (2023), PIS Prolific (2023);
  • Small Chemical Tanker: PIS Mahakam (2023).
The vessels transport various cargo, including oil, gas, and petrochemicals. In the future, it is expected that the company will add dual-fuel and LNG vessels.

As Sub Holding Integrated Marine Logistics of PT Pertamina (Persero), PIS has accomplished many achievements. In terms of performance, up to Semester 1 of 2023, PIS recorded a profit of USD 138.5 million, an increase of 93% compared to the same period last year of USD 71.7 million. This was the highest profit growth in the company’s history so far. Non-captive market revenues also grow from 15.7% to 22.8%. Lastly, in operational aspect, the company has successfully optimized its supply chain by maximizing tonnages and reducing bunker consumption.
