Key stats
7.5 MTPA offshore capacity (LNG and domestic gas, 100% Project)
2021 targeting FID

Pluto Train 2

The brownfield expansion of Pluto LNG to include a second LNG Train (Pluto Train 2) would provide a clear pathway to the low-cost development of the Scarborough resources. Pluto LNG was originally designed to allow efficient brownfield development and third-party gas processing. An area for a second train was pre-prepared in 2007/2008.

SCARBOROUGH IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE BURRUP HUB, CONTRIBUTING TO LONG-TERM ECONOMIC GROWTH AND LOCAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR WESTERN AUSTRALIA.

The Scarborough gas resource is located approximately 375 km west-northwest of the Burrup Peninsula and is part of the Greater Scarborough gas fields which are estimated to hold 13.0 Tcf (2C, 100%) of dry gas. The greater Scarborough gas fields include Thebe (1.4 Tcf, 2C, 100%), Jupiter (0.5 Tcf, 2C, 100%) and Scarborough (11.1 Tcf, 2C, 100%). Woodside is proposing to develop the Scarborough gas resource through new offshore facilities connected by an approximately 430 km pipeline to a proposed expansion of the existing Pluto LNG onshore facility (Pluto Train 2).

McDermott Wins Scarborough EPCIC Contract

HOUSTON, Jan. 10, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- After successfully completing the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for the Scarborough Project, McDermott International has been awarded a contract by Woodside, as Operator for and on behalf of the Scarborough Joint Venture, for the engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPCIC) services for its Floating Production Unit (FPU) offshore Western Australia. The integrated scope also includes the design, fabrication, integration, transportation and installation of the hull and topsides.

"McDermott brings the engineering and execution expertise to deliver integrated deepwater subsea projects and offshore FPUs to the highest standards," said Samik Mukherjee, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. "After a long engagement on the project, the collaborative execution model with Woodside—from pre-FEED through to EPCIC—de-risks execution. Further, the facilities incorporate energy efficiency in design to reduce Scarborough's offshore emissions."

The topside, which will be approximately 30,000 tons, will be fabricated by McDermott's joint venture fabrication yard, Qingdao McDermott Wuchuan, in China. The project scope includes a battery energy storage system to reduce emissions on the topsides and support Woodside's net emissions reduction targets.

"McDermott will apply our long history of successful integrated project delivery for the Scarborough Project, along with our deepwater expertise and industry-leading health and safety standards to drive this incredible project to completion," said Mahesh Swaminathan, Senior Vice President, Asia Pacific.

Engineering expertise will be leveraged from McDermott's Kuala Lumpur and Gurgaon offices, with McDermott's long-established subsea team in Perth supporting transport, installation, hook up and commissioning activities.

The FPU processes natural gas, which includes gas separation, dehydration and compression as well as mono ethylene glycol regeneration and produced-water handling. Designed for a production capacity of up to 1.8 billion standard cubic feet per day, the topside will be connected to the semi-submersible hull and pre-commissioned prior to transportation and installation in a water depth of 3,100 feet (950 meters), approximately 248 miles (400 kilometers) offshore Western Australia. The FPU will be capable of being remotely operated and minimally staffed during normal production operations.

Saipem: awarded two new offshore contracts in Australia and Guyana, for a total amount of 1.1 billion USD

San Donato Milanese (Italy), January 11, 2022 – Saipem has been awarded two new offshore contracts in Australia and Guyana, for a total amount of 1.1 billion USD.

Regarding the first contract, Saipem has received the Notice to Proceed (NTP) from Woodside, as Operator for and on behalf of the Scarborough Joint Venture, for a contract related to the Scarborough project. Saipem will complete the export trunkline coating and installation of the pipeline that will connect the Scarborough gas field with the onshore plant.

The Scarborough gas resource is located in the Carnarvon Basin, offshore Western Australia, and it will be developed through new offshore facilities connected by an approximately 430 km export trunkline with a 36”/32” diameter to a second LNG train (Pluto Train 2) at the existing Pluto LNG onshore facility. The development will be among the lowest carbon intensity sources of LNG globally. The first cargo is expected to be delivered in 2026.

The work assigned to Saipem is relevant to coating, transportation and installation of the trunkline, at a maximum water depth of 1,400 meters, including the fabrication and installation of the line structures and of the pipeline end termination in 950-meter water depth. Offshore operations are planned to start in mid-2023 and will be mainly conducted by the Castorone vessel.

The Scarborough Joint Venture comprises Woodside Energy Scarborough Pty Ltd (73.5%) and BHP Petroleum (Australia) Pty Ltd (26.5%). Woodside and BHP announced on 22 November 2021 that a final investment decision has been made by the Scarborough Joint Venture to proceed with the Scarborough Project.

The second contract has been assigned to Saipem by Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited (EEPGL), a subsidiary of ExxonMobil, for the Yellowtail development project located in the Stabroek block offshore Guyana at a water depth of around 1,800 meters.

Pending the necessary government authorizations and investment approval, the assignment of the contract allows the start of initial engineering and procurement activities necessary to proceed in accordance with the project program.

The contract relates to the Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Installation (EPCI) of the Subsea Umbilicals, Risers & Flowlines (SURF).
Yellowtail is intended to be a greenfield development project encompassing subsea drilling centres, (each equipped with separate oil production, water injection and gas injection wells), linked to a new FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading Unit).

Saipem’s flagship vessel FDS2 will conduct the offshore operations while Saipem’s fabrication facility in Guyana will build the deepwater structural elements.
Francesco Caio, CEO and General Manager of Saipem, commented: “The award of these contracts represents a significant confirmation of the trust of our clients in Saipem’s ability to execute complex offshore projects worldwide. The Scarborough project will be mainly conducted by the Castorone vessel, our versatile and state-of-the-art asset, representative of the innovative and world-class offer which Saipem is able to provide the market. The recently opened Saipem fabrication facility in Georgetown will be involved in the execution of the Yellowtail project, ensuring a positive and tangible impact on the country”.
