Maersk Drilling has secured a contract from Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn. Bhd. (BSP) for the 7th generation drillship Maersk Viking to drill one deepwater exploration well offshore Brunei Darussalam. The contract is expected to commence in March 2021, with an estimated duration of 35 days. The firm contract value is approximately USD 9m, including additional services provided and a mobilisation fee. The contract includes an additional one-well option.

“We’re happy to get this opportunity to add further to our great relationship with BSP. Our jack-up rig Maersk Convincer has been operating offshore Brunei Darussalam for several years now, and our performance has been recognised by Shell as Jack-up of the Year in both 2018 and 2019. I’m certain that Maersk Viking with its high-spec capabilities in combination with our fantastic crew will add even more value to our strong collaboration with BSP,” says Morten Kelstrup, COO, Maersk Drilling.

Maersk Viking is a high-spec ultra-deepwater drillship which was delivered in 2013. It is currently warm-stacked in Johor, Malaysia after completing a drilling campaign in the Bay of Bengal earlier this year.

Maersk Drilling awarded one-well drillship contract in Korea

Maersk Drilling has secured a contract from Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC) for the drillship Maersk Viking to drill one exploration well in Block 6-1 offshore the Republic of Korea. The contract is expected to commence in June 2021, in direct continuation of the rig’s previous work scope, with an estimated duration of 45 days. The contract value is approximately USD 14.5m, including mobilisation and demobilisation fees.

“We’re pleased to be awarded this contract with a new customer in the form of KNOC for their first-ever drillship operation and are confident in our ability to quickly start up operations in Korean jurisdiction after Maersk Viking moves on from its previous job. The rig and its crew have shown an impressive ability to always deliver safe and efficient operations, even during this challenging period marked by a global pandemic,” says COO Morten Kelstrup of Maersk Drilling.

Maersk Viking is a high-spec ultra-deepwater drillship which was delivered in 2013. It is currently mobilising for a campaign in Brunei Darussalam after completing a job in the Bay of Bengal in 2020.

Maersk Viking upgraded with integrated MPD system

Maersk Viking has issued press release yesterday that teams from Maersk Drilling and Weatherford have completed the integration of a deepwater managed pressure drilling (MPD) system on board the 7th generation drillship Maersk Viking. The MPD system is powered by the Victus control system and is operated by the joint Maersk Drilling and Weatherford teams.

“Enabling a permanent deepwater MPD system on board Maersk Viking secures the rig’s attractive position in the APAC region where MPD capabilities are in high demand with very few floaters in the region equipped with such a system,” says Varun Dev, Head of Commercial Asia & Pacific, Maersk Drilling.

The availability of the permanently installed MPD system onboard also unlocks a great number of benefits for the customers through consistency in performance and access to an experienced and trained crew.

“Almost every activity within a well changes its pressure. Too low pressure leads to kicks or formation collapse, pressure too high results in losses and slower drilling. Weatherford Managed Pressure Wells solutions with more than five decades of experience strike the right balance delivering safer, faster and more productive wells,“ says James Riddoch, Geozone Business Manager, Weatherford.

With another permanently integrated MPD system, Maersk Drilling reinforces its presence in the deepwater MPD market segment. This was pioneered by Maersk Valiant as the first deepwater MPD drilling rig approved by the US Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement to operate in the US Gulf of Mexcio and proudly continued by Mærsk Deliverer as the first-ever MPD drilling rig approved by the NOPSEMA authority for operations offshore Australia.

Maersk Drilling secures work for Maersk Viking offshore Malaysia into 2024

Maersk Drilling has secured a contract extension with Sarawak Shell Berhad and Sabah Shell Petroleum Co Ltd (SSB/SSPC) for the 7th generation drillship Maersk Viking. SSB/SSPC have executed the remaining three one-well options of the current drillship contract and awarded an additional eight-well contract to Maersk Drilling.

A five-well work scope will be novated to PTTEP for drilling and plugging and abandonment activities at the Kikeh field offshore Sabah, with a total estimated duration of 116 days and expected commencement of the first well in November 2022, in direct continuation of the drillship’s previous work scope.

Following completion of its work scopes with PTTEP, Maersk Viking will undergo a scheduled special periodic survey, after which the rig will commence a six-well drilling campaign with SSB/SSPC. This work scope is expected to commence in Q4 2023, with an estimated duration of 281 days.

The total firm contract value of the contract extension and additional contract is approximately USD 153m, including demobilisation and mobilisation fees, as well as fees for the use of managed pressure drilling on certain wells. The additional contract with SSB/SSPC contains options to add work on a total of 11 wells.

“PTTEP welcomes Maersk Drilling into our exciting 2022-23 deepwater drilling campaign, and we look forward to forging a strong partnership in Malaysia,” says Nitipong Kongpat, Head of Malaysia Wells Operations for PTTEP.

“We are thrilled to announce that Maersk Viking will continue to support Malaysian oil and gas developments for the next two years. This agreement is a testament to our great collaboration with Shell, and by coordinating the rig’s schedule across several different deepwater operators, we are driving efficiency and leveraging synergies for everyone involved. The campaigns will allow the highly capable Viking crew to add further to their impressive operational record, which recently led to Maersk Viking being named the Shell Floater Rig of the Year, in recognition of the drillship’s outstanding performance in all aspects during its time in Brunei Darussalam,” says COO Morten Kelstrup of Maersk Drilling.

Maersk Viking is a high-spec ultra-deepwater drillship with integrated managed pressure drilling capability. It was delivered in 2013 and is currently operating offshore Malaysia.
