Maersk Drilling selected by Total to drill at world record water depth in Angola-Namibia campaign
14 January, 2020

Based on the Conditional Letter of Award previously announced in connection with Maersk Drilling’s Q3 2019 Trading Statement, Maersk Drilling has been awarded contracts for a three-well exploration drilling project by Total E&P Angola Block 32, Block 48 and Total E and P Namibia B.V. for the 7th generation drillship Maersk Voyager. Maersk Voyager will be employed offshore Angola and Namibia for a campaign which includes the deepest water depth ever drilled offshore. The project includes two wells offshore Angola in Blocks 32 and 48, plus one well offshore Namibia. The campaign is expected to commence in January 2020, with an estimated duration of 240 days. The total value of the firm contracts is approximately USD 46.3m, including a mobilisation fee. The contracts include two additional one-well options.

The well in Angola’s Block 48 will be drilled at a new world record water depth of 3,628 m. The current world record is 3,400 m, set by Maersk Voyager’s sister drillship Maersk Venturer when it drilled the Raya-1 well for Total offshore Uruguay in 2016. To support the campaign in Angola and Namibia, Maersk Drilling will be working with local partners to power successful outcomes and strengthen the development of the local oil and gas industry to the benefit of all parties involved.

“We are thrilled to once again push beyond existing boundaries in collaboration with Total, drawing upon our mutual experience from the exciting deepwater exploration projects we have collaborated on over the years. In addition, it’s great to be heading back to Angola where we performed a series of successful operations from 2012 to 2016, and to do so in a multi-country campaign which will showcase our ability to quickly and smoothly move operations from one jurisdiction to another,” says COO Morten Kelstrup of Maersk Drilling.

Maersk Voyager is a high-spec ultra-deepwater drillship which was delivered in 2014. It has recently performed its scheduled Special Periodic Survey in Walvis Bay, Namibia, after completing campaigns in Ghana and Equatorial Guinea in 2019.

Maersk Drilling secures additional three-well contract for Maersk Voyager in Angola

Maersk Drilling has been awarded a three-well contract from Total E&P Angola for the 7th generation drillship Maersk Voyager which will be employed to drill development wells in Angola’s Block 17. The three-well contract has an estimated duration of 140 days, which means that Maersk Voyager is now contracted until Q2 2021. The firm value of the three-well contract is approximately USD 30m, including integrated drilling services provided.

The two one-well options included in Maersk Voyager’s previously agreed work scope for Total E&P remain.

“We are delighted to add three more wells to Maersk Voyager’s work scope in Angola where our operations were re-started in late August following a suspension period due to the restrictions imposed to combat the global pandemic. We’re happy to go back to work in collaboration with the local partners we have engaged to support the campaign,” says COO Morten Kelstrup of Maersk Drilling.

Maersk Voyager is a high-spec ultra-deepwater drillship which was delivered in 2014. It has been operating offshore Africa since 2015 and commenced operations for Total E&P Angola in January this year.

Maersk Drilling secures one-year multi-country commitment for drillship with Shell

Maersk Drilling has been awarded contracts with Shell for the provision of the 7th generation drillship Maersk Voyager for drilling services offshore multiple countries. The contracts are expected to commence in April 2022, with a total firm duration of one year. The total contract value is approximately USD 107.5m, including a mobilisation fee, but excluding integrated services expected to be provided and potential performance bonuses. The contracts include an additional one-year option.

To support a strong operational performance in the campaigns, Maersk Drilling and Shell have agreed to implement the RigFlow solution delivered by Maersk Drilling subsidiary Horizon56. RigFlow standardises and digitalises the core workflows involved in well construction, including real-time exchange of information between onshore planning units, the offshore drilling teams, and the service companies supporting the operations.

“We’re excited to announce that we will be continuing the excellent collaboration that has now led to seven commitments for our rigs from Shell-affiliated operators in less than two years. This agreement will allow Maersk Voyager to showcase our ability to move swiftly and efficiently between jurisdictions and in this way support Shell with the efficiency gained from being able to plan in the longer term across several different operations. The highly capable Voyager crew recently drilled at a new world record water depth offshore Angola, and they’re ready to execute this multi-country campaign at the same high level of operational excellence,” says COO Morten Kelstrup of Maersk Drilling.

Maersk Drilling secures six-month extension for drillship with Shell

Shell has exercised an option to extend the provisioning of the 7th generation drillship Maersk Voyager for drilling services offshore Mexico. The contract extension is expected to commence in April 2023, in direct continuation of the rig’s current contract, with a firm duration of six months. The contract value of the extension is approximately USD 77m, excluding integrated services expected to be provided and potential performance bonuses. The parties have further amended the options included in the contract, so that it now contains options to add up to 18 months of additional drilling work.

Maersk Drilling and Shell have further agreed to also implement the RigFlow solution, delivered by Maersk Drilling subsidiary Horizon56, for the drilling campaign offshore Mexico. RigFlow supports a strong operational performance by standardising and digitalising the core workflows involved in well construction, including real-time exchange of information between onshore planning units, the offshore drilling teams, and the service companies supporting the operations.
