The Ocean BlackLion drillship was ordered by Diamond Offshore in May 2012 at a cost of approximately $655 million which was subsequently delivered by Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd 3 years later.
The rig has just completed an upgrade new installation of NOV 215 MT passive heave compensator onboard. She is equipped to work in 12000ft of water and up to 40000ft of drilling depth.
The rig is currently operating for bp under 2 years drilling contract in the US GOM.

HOUSTON, February 8, 2024 -- Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc. (NYSE: DO) today announced that it has executed a two-year contract extension with a subsidiary of bp in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico for the Ocean BlackLion, commencing in September 2024 in direct continuation of the rig’s current contract. This contract extension represents approximately $350 million dollars of additional backlog.
