First Gas for PETRONAS' First Floating LNG Facility, PFLNG Satu
17 Nov 2016

PETRONAS’ first floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility, PFLNG SATU achieved its first gas milestone on 14 November 2016 from the Kanowit gas field, offshore Sarawak.

The introduction of gas from the KAKG-A central processing platform at the field ignited the PFLNG SATU flare tower at the height of 130 metres, proving the technological aspirations of PETRONAS to unlock gas reserves in Malaysia’s remote and stranded gas fields.

PETRONAS’ Acting Vice President LNG Assets, Development & Production Adnan Zainal Abidin said the first gas milestone signified the commencement of Commissioning and Startup for the floating LNG facility that will soon progress towards Commercial Operations and first cargo.

“We have come a long way with our partners to deliver a game changer in the global LNG business. The shared vision for PFLNG SATU to monetise gas resources uneconomical to develop via conventional means is an achievement all can be proud of,” said Adnan.

PFLNG SATU made its 2,120 nautical mile journey from Okpo, South Korea to the Kanowit gas field on 14 May 2016 for its offshore phase of commissioning. Fitted with an external turret for water-depths of between 70 metres and 200 metres deep, PFLNG SATU will extract natural gas via a flexible subsea pipeline for the liquefaction, production, storage and offloading processes of LNG at the offshore gas field.

Designed to last up to 20 years without dry-docking, PFLNG SATU has the flexibility to be redeployed to multiple locations to better access marginal and stranded gas fields of Malaysia.

PFLNG SATU will introduce a new play type to complement PETRONAS’ global LNG portfolio and enhance its reputation as a preferred and reliable LNG supplier.

SOFEC Completes Engineering, Supply and Delivery of Mooring System (Chains & Anchors) Contract – PFLNG Satu External Turret

Houston, April 17, 2019 – SOFEC, Inc. (“SOFEC”) announced today that it has completed the Engineering, Supply and Delivery of Mooring System (Chains & Anchors) contract for PETRONAS Floating LNG 1 (L) Ltd (“PFLNG1”). This project included the engineering, supply and delivery of the replacement mooring legs and anchors for the external turret system.

The PFLNG Satu has an external turret moored system that was designed to be moored in a water depth ranging from 70 to 200 meters. In March 2019, PFLNG1 relocated its PFLNG Satu vessel to the Kebabangan cluster field, offshore Sabah in Malaysia, which is located 90 kilometers northwest of Kota Kinabalu in 120 meters water depth. It was previously operating in the Kumang cluster field, offshore Sarawak in 75 meters water depth.

According to Rick Hall, SOFEC’s President and CEO: “The original PFLNG Satu installation in 2016 was the world’s first offshore moored FLNG vessel. We are excited to have completed the work for this relocation project and appreciate the confidence which PFLNG1 has shown in SOFEC by awarding the contract to us. We value our relationship with PETRONAS on this project and are pleased by their confidence in the reliability of our external turret moorings.”
