SAPURAOMV ANNOUNCES BAKONG’S FIRST PRODUCTION FROM SK408 GAS FIELDS
Kuala Lumpur, September 3, 2020

Image

Awarded: December 2012
Block area: approximately 4,400 km2, located 130 km NW of Miri
Partnership: SKE operator (40%) with PCSB (30%) and SSB (30%)
Drilled 5 back to back gas discoveries in 2014 finding about 2.2 TCF gas. 3 exploration wells will be drilled in Q4 2015. A large 3D Seismic Survey will be acquired in 2016. The gas discoveries are moving through the Field Development Plan (FDP) process with 1st gas expected in Q4 2018.

SapuraOMV Upstream announces stable production from its operated Bakong gas field project under the SK408 Production Sharing Contract (PSC), which was delivered within budget. The production phase started in June 2020. This follows the successful production from SapuraOMV‘s Larak gas field which started in December 2019 and the start-up of the Shell-operated Gorek field in May 2020. With this first production from Bakong field, Phase 1 of the SK408 development is now entirely on stream.

The SK408 gas fields are part of the discoveries made by SapuraOMV Upstream in a drilling campaign in 2014. The Phase 1 development of SK408 PSC aims to commercialise the gas reserves from Larak, Gorek and Bakong fields. As per the upstream gas sales agreement with PETRONAS, SapuraOMV Upstream and its SK408 partners will supply gas from these fields to the PETRONAS LNG complex in Bintulu, Sarawak.

“With this achievement, we continue to demonstrate our commitment to our stakeholders on safety and project delivery, despite the many challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Shahril Shamsudin, Chairman of SapuraOMV Upstream.

“This achievement further strengthens our presence in the existing market, propelling us to become one of the most significant gas producers in the country and in the region, which would further cement our position as a trusted and reliable oil and gas company,” he further highlighted.

Johann Pleininger, Executive Board Member responsible for Upstream and Deputy Chairman of OMV said, “With the successful start-up phase, we are setting a further step in strengthening the gas focus in our production portfolio and it is a strong signal in our OMV core region Asia-Pacific.”

The SK408 gas fields are SapuraOMV’s second major Upstream gas development project in East Malaysia, following the successful development and commencement of production from the SK310 B15 gas field. With the full ramp-up of the first phase of SK408, SapuraOMV’s production is scheduled to increase to more than 30 kboe/d in 2020, which will be more than double the production rate compared to 2019.

SapuraOMV’s partners under SK408 PSC are Sarawak Shell Berhad (30%) and PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd (30%).

SapuraOMV Upstream, headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, is a strategic partnership between Sapura Energy Berhad and Austria’s OMV Aktiengesellschaft.

SapuraOMV Upstream operates internationally and has a strong portfolio of oil and gas assets in Malaysia as well as exploration interests in Mexico, Australia and New Zealand. The partnership has identified Malaysia as its hub to expand into Asia Pacific, and its combined strengths and expertise will pave the way for the joint venture to become a leading independent oil and gas company.

First gas achieved at Jerun gas field in Malaysia

12 Jul 2024

The operator of the Jerun field in Malaysia, SapuraOMV Upstream Sdn Bhd, has announced that first gas has been achieved. Shell plc has a 30% equity stake in the field, through its Malaysian subsidiary, Sarawak Shell Berhad, and made a final investment decision on the development in 2021.

The field is located around 160 kilometres (km) north-west of Bintulu in Sarawak, and 190 km north-west of Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia. Comprising an integrated central processing platform, Jerun will export gas through a new 80-km pipeline into the E11RB production hub, for onward delivery to Bintulu based customers including Malaysia LNG. The Jerun platform is designed to produce up to 550 million cubic feet of gas per day, with condensate production of 15,000 barrels per day during peak production.

“Jerun was a highly attractive investment for Shell, building on our interests in this important region off the coast of Sarawak, offshore Malaysia, where Shell operates the Timi platform and has the Rosmari-Marjoram project under construction,” said Zoë Yujnovich, Shell’s Integrated Gas and Upstream Director. “Gas is an important fuel for Malaysia and the world, providing a secure form of energy for heating, cooling and power generation. We are delighted the venture has reached this milestone.”

The Jerun gas field was discovered in 2015, under the SK408 production sharing contract. Jerun is operated by SapuraOMV Upstream (40%) in partnership with Sarawak Shell Berhad (30%) and PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd (30%).
