PTTEP makes largest gas discovery offshore Malaysia
14 July 2019

PTT Exploration and Production Public Company (PTTEP) has discovered a large gas field with its first well on the SK410B block offshore Sarawak, Malaysia.

The company’s subsidiary PTTEP HK Offshore (Malaysia Branch), or PTTEP HKO, encountered 252m of net gas pay, suggesting a multi-trillion cubic feet (tcf) gas discovery.

The drilling of the well started in March 2019, targeting non-associated gas in the primary target of the Middle Miocene cycle IV/V carbonate reservoir. The well was drilled to a depth of 3,810m with a completion-constrained rate of 41.3mmscfd and 246 barrel of condensate per day.

PTTEP claims that the drilling result of the Lang Lebah-1RDR2 is historically the company’s largest discovery and it will require additional drilling for confirming the upside potential.
The Sarawak SK410B project is situated in the shallow waters, 90km offshore Sarawak, with acreages of 1,800km². The project is operated by PTTEP HKO with a 42.5% working interest. KUFPEC Malaysia and Petronas Carigali are partners in the project with 42.5% and 15% interest respectively.

In March, PTTEP acquired Murphy Oil’s business in Malaysia worth $2.12bn. The company also won two exploration blocks off Malaysia coast.

Apart from the Sarawak SK410B project, PTTEP’s Malaysian portfolio includes the Sarawak SK417, which is assessing the petroleum potential and the Sarawak SK438 that is under drilling preparation of two exploration wells.

PTTEP also has producing project in Blocks B-17 and B-17-01 in Malaysia–Thailand Joint Development Area, and jointly invests with PTT in MLNG Train 9 project, a LNG liquefaction facility, through PTT Global LNG Company.

Bangkok, February 10, 2021 – PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP), through a wholly-owned subsidiary PTTEP HK Offshore Limited (Malaysia Branch) or PTTEP HKO, successfully completed the Lang Lebah-2 appraisal well in the Sarawak SK 410B Project. The drilling result registers a new record for PTTEP’s largest gas discovery.

Mr. Phongsthorn Thavisin, PTTEP Chief Executive Officer, disclosed that the appraisal drilling at Lang Lebah structure followed the gas discovery of its first exploration well, Lang Lebah-1RDR2, in 2019. The appraisal well Lang Lebah-2 was completed in mid-January 2021. It was drilled to a total depth of 4,320 meters with proven over 600 meters of net gas pay, indicating a larger reservoir than the initial estimate. The well test shows a flow rate of 50 million cubic feet of gas per day (MMSCFD). The result will accelerate the development plan for the project.

“We are delighted to confirm the largest-ever gas discovery by PTTEP. The experience and expertise from our operations in the Gulf of Thailand and overseas have contributed to this achievement. The Lang Lebah gas discovery strengthens PTTEP’s investment base in Malaysia and demonstrates that our ‘Execute strategy’ has translated into reserves increase for the company’s long-term growth,” said PTTEP CEO.

The Sarawak SK 410B Project is located approximately 90 kilometers offshore Sarawak, Malaysia. PTTEP HKO is the operator with 42.5 percent participating interest while KUFPEC Malaysia (SK-410B) Limited (KUFPEC) and PETRONAS Carigali Sdn. Bhd. (PCSB) hold 42.5 percent and 15 percent participating interests respectively.

Apart from the Sarawak SK 410B, PTTEP’s portfolio in Malaysia comprises Block K, SK 309 and SK 311, and the Malaysia–Thailand Joint Development Area (MTJDA) which are producing projects; Block H which is a development project; and SK 417, SK 314A, SK 438, SK 405B, PM 407 and PM 415 which are exploration projects. PTTEP also jointly invests with PTT in the MLNG Train 9 Project, an LNG liquefaction plant, through PTT Global LNG Company.

PETRONAS Continues To Chart Giant Discoveries In Central Luconia Province, Offshore Malaysia

In less than two years after the 2019 discovery of the Lang Lebah Field in the Central Luconia province, Malaysia is blessed again with the success of Lang Lebah-2 appraisal well. Based on early indications, the discovered volume is potentially among the largest gas discoveries in the world for 2020.

Registering over 800 meters of gas column for the whole Lang Lebah structure incorporating parameters from both wildcat and appraisal wells, the Middle Miocene Cycle IV/V Carbonate play clearly points to a sustained presence of large hydrocarbon accumulation in the region, and serves as a testament that the basin still holds tremendous potential.

Further investigation into the petroleum system of the region is set to open up more opportunities in the surrounding areas.

The remarkable discovery also indicates significant untapped exploration potential in the deeper plays sharing the same hydrocarbon kitchen with Lang Lebah. The recent giant discovery is instrumental in providing a new perspective on hydrocarbon potential in this world class super basin.

Future exploration demands innovative thinking to challenge conventional ideas. Together with cutting-edge technology, new datasets and information, the chances of replicating successes like Lang Lebah are promising. PETRONAS is actively updating the geological and geophysical (G&G) data throughout Malaysia via acquisitions of 3D seismic & FTG (multi-client and proprietary) data, CSEM, seabed geochemistry and various technical studies to facilitate future exploration success.

Highlighting Malaysia’s exciting block opportunities, PETRONAS’ Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM) will launch a virtual Malaysia Bid Round 2021 (MBR 2021) on 26 February 2021 themed “Grow Your Energy Portfolio With Us”. This event is supported by a series of webinars, the first two of which were held on 3rd and 9th February 2021 respectively.

MBR 2021 will offer 13 exploration blocks covering all three producing regions in Malaysia, including six discovered fields and deepwater blocks in Sabah and Sarawak.

Upstream players and investors can expect a number of attractive enhancements, which include larger blocks on offer with attractive fiscal terms coupled with flexible bidding options and low entry costs. Potential investors who wish to learn more about these enhancements and offers are encouraged to join the launch and the remaining MBR 2021 webinars.

A new shallow water Enhanced Profitability fiscal term will also be unveiled by PETRONAS to spotlight investor-friendly exploration investments in Malaysia.
