HOUSTON, Dec. 22, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- McDermott International, Inc. (NYSE:MDR) today announced a substantial* contract award from Mærsk Olie og Gas A/S (Maersk Oil) for engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) services for the Tyra Redevelopment project, located offshore in the Danish sector of the North Sea.

“This award heralds our return to the North Sea and is a part of our strategic growth strategy,” said Scott Munro, Vice President of Americas, Europe and Africa. “By executing our part of the Tyra Redevelopment project from Kuala Lumpur and Batam, the project showcases our vertically integrated One McDermott Way approach to project execution and delivery, which demonstrates our global engineering and fabrication capabilities. This is one of several projects executed in this way. We have had a long relationship with Maersk Oil, and are committed to ensuring the efficient use of resources to meet their needs for a safe, on-schedule, within budget project, and one that fully meets the stringent requirements for automation and corrosion resistance, ensuring a long and productive life for the new facilities.”

McDermott will provide engineering, procurement and construction for two separate work packages for Maersk Oil under the redevelopment project. With a combined weight of all structures provided by McDermott at nearly 32,000 tons (29,000 metric tons), the scope of work represents one of the largest combined projects for McDermott in the North Sea.

McDermott plans to perform project management, engineering and supply chain management from its office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and will fabricate and assemble the structures at its fabrication yard at Batam Island, Indonesia.

Work on the contract is expected to begin early next year and the lump sum contract will be reflected in McDermott’s fourth quarter 2017 backlog. McDermott is scheduled to complete its work packages for sail-away by February 1, 2020 and February 1, 2021.

Project Details
One McDermott work package consists of Tyra East G platform’s gas processing topside of approximately 18,188 tons (16,500 metric tons) and includes two 328 foot (100 meter) connecting bridges, of 468 and 771 tons (425 and 700 metric tons) respectively, and a 449 foot (137-meter-long) flare.

The other McDermott work package consists of two wellhead topsides for Tyra East B and Tyra East C at 1,763 and 1,366 tons (1,600 and 1,240 metric tons) respectively; a 2,480 ton (2,250 metric ton) riser topside at Tyra East E; two wellhead topsides for Tyra West B and Tyra West C at 1,421 and 1,488 tons (1,290 and 1,350 metric tons) respectively; and a riser topside at 335 tons (304 metric ton) at Tyra West E. Also included are four connecting bridges ranging from 60 to 1,102 tons (55 to 1,000 metric tons). McDermott will also fabricate six module support frames (MSF) totaling 1,289 tons (1,170 metric tons) to raise the existing platforms 42 feet (13 meters) to account for seabed subsidence. The existing four wellheads and two riser topsides along with the old bridges will be removed by others while retaining the original jackets to accept the new topsides with their MSFs.

Located approximately 139 miles (225 kilometers) west of Esbjerg, Denmark in the North Sea, the Tyra gas field is located in blocks 5504/11 and 12 and is the center of Denmark’s national energy infrastructure, processing 90 percent of the nation’s gas production. First production was from the field in 1984.

The Tyra platforms have been at the core of Denmark’s energy infrastructure for 30 years, processing 90% of the nation’s natural gas production. As the responsible energy major, Total is investing more than 300 million dollars to redevelop the Tyra platforms in the Danish North Sea to support Denmark and Europe’s transition towards a low-carbon energy future.

The redeveloped Tyra will be a high-tech production and export center that will secure gas supply for many years ahead. At peak production, the redeveloped Tyra will provide enough gas to supply the equivalent of 1.5 million Danish homes.

Following completion in 2022, the new Tyra platform is expected to deliver approximately 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent (boe) per day, equating to over 200 million boe over the next 25 years.

Total is committed to the long-term development of the Danish offshore sector. The Tyra redevelopment project will not only promote economic and social benefits, but it will become a catalyst for other development opportunities in the North Sea.

One of the aims of Tyra's redevelopment project is to pave the way for new investments from the Danish Underground Consortium (DUC) partners and third-party tiebacks.

REBUILDING AND REVITALIZING TYRA

The original Tyra platform started production in 1984 and has since been complimented by several satellite platforms. However, due to subsidence, redevelopment is necessary. Subsidence is a natural consequence of continuously extracting oil and gas from gas fields over decades.

That extraction causes the hydrocarbon pockets in those gas fields to collapse and the seabed to sink. The seabed below the Tyra platforms has sunk nearly five meters since 1984.

As a result, the gap between the sea and the Tyra platforms’ decks was reduced. This reduction ultimately means redevelopment is necessary to keep both crew and equipment safe, as well as keep production efficient.

The execution of Tyra's redevelopment project is both a global and local effort. In addition to fabricating installations in both Europe and Asia, project efforts are being executed locally in Esbjerg, and offshore in the Danish North Sea.

The redevelopment project started in 2018, with the first steel cut on the new platforms. Following a safe and well-executed offshore campaign, the Tyra field’s production was temporarily suspended in September 2019 to allow the next steps in the redevelopment project to take place.

The unique scope of work for Tyra's redevelopment project includes removing old facilities, modifying existing ones, and installing new features.

The two existing process and accommodation platforms will be replaced by one new process platform and one new accommodation platform. The four wellhead platforms and two riser platforms will have their jackets extended by 13 meters, and the current topsides will be replaced.

A HIGH-TECH FIELD FOR THE FUTURE

The new Tyra will be a state-of-the-art facility ensuring efficient production and enhanced safety. With the use of new technology and modernized working processes, Total anticipates that Tyra’s operational efficiency will increase from its current average of around 80% to more than 90% after launching.

These new technologies and methodologies will be integrated with the redeveloped Tyra platforms:
  • Sensors that continuously collect data about critical equipment from around 100,000 data points.
  • Digital and online tools to monitor performance and improve maintenance.
  • Handheld digital devices for offshore employees to have constant access to systems, data, drawings, etc., as well as onshore specialist support.
  • Big data and shared data availability for both onshore and offshore staff to foster better collaboration, understanding and analytics.
  • Utilizing such efficient infrastructure and modern technology, the Tyra Redevelopment Project also supports Total’s vision of making our operations more sustainable.

Sembcorp Marine Delivers Three Wellhead and Riser Topsides and Bridges to TotalEnergies EP Denmark

Completed facilities highlight Sembcorp Marine’s resilience and capability to continue delivering projects despite COVID-19 challenges

Singapore, 25 July 2021—Sembcorp Marine Ltd (the “Company”, together with its subsidiaries, the “Group”) has safely completed the fabrication of two wellhead topsides, one riser topside and two bridges for deployment to TotalEnergies’ redeveloped Tyra Field located in the Danish North Sea.



The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented challenges to the completion of the modules and bridges. In spite of significant supply chain disruptions and acute manpower shortages, the Group demonstrated its resilience in overcoming the challenges through operational flexibility, close collaboration with its customer, and leveraging its global supply chain and logistics capabilities, to deliver the modules and bridges. This was achieved without compromise to safety and quality.

The topsides and bridges sailed away from Sembcorp Marine Admiralty Yard today. They will replace Tyra’s ageing facilities to support TotalEnergies’ vision and pursuit of sustainable operations.

The redeveloped Tyra is envisioned to be a high-tech production and natural gas export centre over the next 25 years. It is designed to reduce the environmental footprint and optimise the energy efficiency of its operations.

Sembcorp Marine Head of Offshore Platforms, Mr Samuel Wong, said, “Amid the multitude of challenges brought on by COVID-19, Sembcorp Marine is proud to have completed the structures safely for our customer. Vice President, Head of the Tyra Redevelopment TotalEnergies EP Denmark, Mr Morten Hesselager Pedersen, said, “Today we celebrate the sailaway of the first new Tyra topsides towards the Danish North Sea. The sailaway is a result of the good collaboration between Sembcorp Marine, and our site team at the yard in Singapore. The Tyra Redevelopment project reaches a key milestone as the topsides are installed later this summer, and we will see the physical contours of Tyra II, which will be the new high tech hub for Danish natural gas and reduce CO2 emissions by 30%.”

In December 2019, Sembcorp Marine secured the subcontract to construct six topside modules and four bridges for the TotalEnergies EP Denmark’s Tyra Redevelopment Project. The remaining topside modules and bridges are projected to be delivered in January 2022.
