[Norway] Valhall

Unread post by escveritas »

Valhall is a giant oilfield in the southern Norwegian North Sea. Production started in 1982 and following commissioning of the new PH platform in 2013 the field now has the potential to continue producing for several decades.

Early January 2017, Valhall and Hod passed one billion barrels of oil equivalents produced, which is more than three times the volume expected at the opening of the field in 1982. The ambition is to produce a further 500 million barrels.

Valhall consists of a field centre with six platforms and two unmanned flank platforms. The field is located in 70 metres of water. Hod is tied back and remotely operated from Valhall.

The field was originally developed with three facilities for accommodation, drilling and processing, and started production in 1982. The Valhall complex consists today of six separate steel platforms for living quarters, drilling, wellheads, production, water injection, combined process- and hotel platform respectively. These platforms are bridge-connected.

The Valhall Flank developments are two identical unmanned wellhead platforms each equipped with 16 drilling slots and located about 6 km (one to the North and one to the South) from the existing Valhall Facilities where well streams are processed. The South Flank started production in 2003 and the North Flank came on stream in 2004.

Submitting plan for development and operation for Hod
24. June 2020

Aker BP and Pandion Energy today submitted the plan for development and operation (PDO) for Hod to the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy. The Hod field will be developed in collaboration with Aker BP’s alliance partners with a normally unmanned installation remotely controlled from the Valhall field centre, with very low CO2 emissions due to power from shore. Hod is among the first projects to be realized under the temporary changes to the Norwegian petroleum tax system recently introduced.

Total investments for the development are estimated at around USD 600 million and the total employment effect is estimated to 5000 FTEs. Production start is planned for first quarter 2022. Recoverable reserves for Hod are estimated at around 40 million barrels of oil equivalents. Aker BP is the operator with 90 percent ownership interest. Pandion Energy is partner with 10 percent interest.

– With projects like Hod, we are creating significant value both for our owners and for the society at large, while we contribute to maintaining the capabilities of Norway’s world-class supply industry, says CEO in Aker BP, Karl Johnny Hersvik.

The Alliance Model increases efficiency

Hod will be developed in collaboration with Aker BP’s alliance partners. Five alliances will be involved, in line with Aker BP’s strategy for increased value creation through alliances and strategic partnerships.

– The Alliance Model delivers significant cost reductions and is an efficient execution model. This is key to developing the Hod field, which is expected to contribute with 40 million barrels of oil equivalents from the Valhall area, says Hersvik.

The steel jacket and topside will be constructed by Kvaerner Verdal.

Copy of Valhall Flank West

Hod will be developed with a Normally Unmanned Installationremotely controlled from the Valhall field centre. Five wells with sidetracks will be drilled in order to increase recovery.
– The concept, the execution model and the organization are copied from the Valhall Flank West development, which started production in December 2019 and set a new standard for delivery of flank developments on the Norwegian continental shelf. We see room for further improvements in the Hod project, says SVP Projects, Knut Sandvik.
Power from shore

Hod will receive power from shore via Valhall field centre.
– During normal operations, this means virtually zero local CO2 emissions. This is in line with Aker BP’s strategy to minimize the footprint of our operations, says SVP Operations & Asset Development, Kjetel Digre.
– In 2019, Aker BP’s CO2 intensity was below 7 kg CO2/boe, which is less than half the global industry average, and below the average for Norwegian continental shelf. From 2020 on, our goal is to deliver an emission intensity below 5 kg CO2/boe. Projects such as Hod, with zero CO2 emissions during normal operations, are very important in achieving this goal, says Digre.
Hod will be delivered with an electric lifeboat. The lifeboat is monitored from the Valhall field centre. Both the crane and seawater pump are electric and receive power from shore via the Valhall field centre. All of this contributes to reduced need for maintenance.

First Oil in 2022

The original Hod platform was the first unmanned platform on the Norwegian continental shelf when it started production in 1990. The original platform is no longer in service and will be removed after the wells have been permanently plugged. First oil from the new Hod platform – which will be named Hod B – is planned for first quarter 2022.

-The gigantic Valhall field has produced more than one billion barrels of oil equivalent since the field was opened in 1982. The ambition is to produce another billion barrels over the next 40 years. Hod is an important contribution in achieving our ambition for Valhall, Digre comments.

Billion-kroner contract to Rosenberg Worley
26.08.2022

Aker BP and alliance partner Aker Solutions are awarding Rosenberg Worley a letter of intent for the construction of two modules for the new central platform on the Valhall field in the North Sea. This contract represents the largest new-build project in many years, and it will lead to 1,000 jobs at Rosenberg in Stavanger.

“With this award, Aker BP and Aker Solutions are ensuring additional ongoing activity in Norway, in a project that falls under the temporary tax changes. The choice of a Norwegian yard is entirely deliberate. It demonstrates that we’re responding to the politicians’ expectations to preserve activity, guarantee jobs and develop expertise in Norwegian industry during the period before renewables projects ramp up in scope,” says Aker BP CEO Karl Johnny Hersvik.

Will provide more than 1,000 jobs

Aker BP and its licence partners are carrying out a coordinated development of several licences in the Valhall area. The project is called Valhall PWP–Fenris (previously NCP/King Lear) and it is being delivered by the Fixed Facilities Alliance between Aker BP, Aker Solutions and ABB.

Valhall PWP consists of three large modules totalling more than 15,000 tonnes. The process module will be built by Aker Solutions on Stord. Rosenberg Worley will deliver the wellbay module and the utility module. The platform will be assembled on Stord.

“This award is a good example of cooperation between competing companies such as Aker Solutions and Rosenberg Worley to utilise a larger share of the supplier base – in the best interests of the industry in Norway. It is entirely necessary to keep and develop expertise in the industry,” says Aker Solutions CEO Kjetel Digre.

The letter of intent presumes approval of plan for development and operation (PDO) by the Storting, and it has a value for Rosenberg of around NOK 1.6 billion. If approved, the Valhall modules will bring jobs for more than 1,000 people at Rosenberg in Stavanger. Construction is scheduled to start in autumn 2023.

“The construction of the Valhall modules will be important in maintaining the high activity, and will help preserve expertise and capacity at Rosenberg in the extension of ongoing projects and towards new market areas. We expect that around 40 apprentices will be able to complete their vocational training as a result of the project. These are young people who’ll be essential in developing renewable projects at our company in the future,” says Rosenberg Worley Managing Director Jan Narvestad.

Major investments

Aker BP and the licence partners Pandion Energy og PGNiG Upstream Norway are planning to invest between NOK 40 and 50 billion in Valhall PWP–Fenris. The partners are on track to submit the PDO towards the end of the year. The PDO will be deliberated in the Storting before the summer of 2023.

“Through Valhall PWP–Fenris, we’re planning to establish Valhall as a gas hub in the southern North Sea, which will provide sorely needed gas deliveries to Europe. At the same time, we’ll be maximising the value of a giant with very low emissions on the Norwegian shelf. This project is an important contribution toward the ambition to produce a total of two billion barrels and extend the lifetime of the Valhall area to 2060. The value creation from this area has vast ripple effects and provides substantial tax revenue for the broader society,” Karl Johnny Hersvik says.

In total, the development of Valhall PWP–Fenris is expected to create 65,000 full-time equivalents in Norway during the project and operations phase. The Norwegian share of the project is more than 65 per cent.
