Eni acquires the Tango FLNG to produce and export LNG from the Republic of Congo

San Donato Milanese (Milan), 05 August 2022 - Eni informs that it has acquired the company Export LNG Ltd, which owns the Tango FLNG floating liquefaction facility, from Exmar group. The facility will be used by Eni in the Republic of Congo, as part of the activities of the natural gas development project in the Marine XII block, in line with Eni's strategy to leverage gas equity resources.

The Tango FLNG, built in 2017, has a treatment capacity of approximately 3 million standard cubic meters/day and an LNG production capacity of approximately 0.6 million tons per year (about 1 billion standard cubic meters/year). The acquisition of this facility allows the development of a fast-track model capable of seizing the opportunities of the LNG market. In addition, the high flexibility and mobility characteristics of the Tango FLNG will favour the development and enhancement of Eni's equity gas by accelerating production start-up time.

Tango FLNG will begin its activity in Congo in the second half of 2023, following the completion of mooring and connection works necessary to tie with the Marine XII network and infrastructure. LNG production from Marine XII is expected to begin in 2023, and when fully operational it will provide volumes in excess of 3 million tons/year (over 4.5 billion cubic meters/year).

Eni celebrates sail away of the Tango FLNG and Excalibur FSU vessels to Congo

The milestone aligns with the timeline of the Congo LNG project, whose first phase will startup in December 2023. The project will reach approximately 4.5 BCMA of gas liquefaction capacity at plateau

San Donato Milanese (Milan), 21 October 2023 – In the presence of Bruno Jean Richard Itoua, Minister of Hydrocarbons of the Republic of the Congo, Maixent Raoul Ominga, Managing Director of SNPC, and Guido Brusco, Eni’s Chief Operating Officer Natural Resources, today Eni celebrated the sail away of the Tango Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) and Excalibur Floating Storage Unit (FSU) vessels from Dubai to Congo’s offshore. The milestone aligns with the timeline of the Congo LNG project, whose first phase will startup in December 2023.

Tango FLNG, which has a liquefaction capacity of approximately 1 billion cubic meters per annum of gas (BCMA), will be moored 3 kilometers offshore along with the Excalibur FSU vessel upon their arrival in Congo.

The Congo LNG project leverages Marine XII gas resources and existing production facilities in a new, phased approach that will allow to reach approximately 4.5 BCMA of gas liquefaction capacity at plateau, as well as zero routine gas flaring. A second FLNG vessel with a capacity of approximately 3.5 BCMA of gas is under construction and will begin production in 2025.

The project will help the Republic of the Congo meet its energy needs while seizing the opportunity to exploit surplus gas through LNG production, allowing the Country to join the group of global exporters of Liquefied Natural Gas in record time. According to the agreements recently signed, all LNG produced will be marketed by Eni.

Eni has been operating in Congo for over 50 years and is the only company active in the development of the country’s gas resources. Eni currently supplies gas to Congo Electric Power Station (CEC), which accounts for 70% of the country's power production capacity. Eni is strongly committed to promoting the energy transition in the country. Among other initiatives, the Oyo Center of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency was recently handed over to the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Technological Innovation, which will manage it together with UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization). Furthermore, the company is developing agri-feedstock production projects that do not compete with the food supply chain, and whose produce will help feed Eni’s biorefineries.

Eni started the gas introduction into Tango FLNG facility, Republic of Congo

San Donato Milanese (Milan), December 28, 2023 - Eni announces the introduction of gas into the Tango Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) facility moored in Congolese waters.

Gas introduction has been achieved in record time– only twelve months after the final investment decision. This is a key milestone for the Congo LNG project, which encompasses the adoption of new technologies and a strong synergy with existing producing assets. Following completion of the commissioning phase, Tango FLNG will produce its first LNG cargo by the first quarter of 2024, placing the Republic of Congo on the list of LNG-producing countries.

The Tango FLNG facility has a liquefaction capacity of about 1 billion cubic meters per year (BCMA) and is moored alongside the Excalibur Floating Storage Unit (FSU), using an innovative configuration called "split mooring," implemented here for the first time in a floating LNG terminal.

Congo LNG will enhance the gas resources of the Marine XII permit and achieve approximately 4.5 BCMA of plateau gas liquefaction capacity through phased development and with a target of zero routine gas flaring. A second FLNG facility with a capacity of about 3.5 BCMA is currently under construction and will begin production in 2025. The entire volume of LNG produced will be marketed by Eni.

Eni has been operating in Congo for 55 years and is the only company active in the development of the country's gas resources. Eni currently supplies gas to the Centrale Électrique du Congo (CEC), which provides 70% of the country's power generation capacity. Eni is strongly committed to promoting the nation’s energy transition through several initiatives, including the Oyo Center of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, which has recently been handed over to the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Technological Innovation of the Republic of Congo, which will manage it together with UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization). In addition, the company is working on the production of agricultural raw materials, not in competition with the food supply chain, to be used as biofuel feedstocks. Moreover, Eni has begun distributing stoves to local communities, with the goal of reducing biomass consumption and the emissions associated with combustion.

Pointe Noire (Republic of the Congo), 27 February 2024 – In the occasion of the first shipment of LNG from the Republic of the Congo, the President of the Republic of the Congo Denis Sassou-N'Guesso, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Eni Giuseppe Zafarana, and the CEO of Eni Claudio Descalzi celebrated the successful start-up of LNG production in the country. With the first cargo, the Republic of the Congo enters the group of LNG exporting countries, opening up opportunities for economic growth while contributing to global energy balance.

Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi commented that: “The first cargo of LNG from Congo is the result of the strong commitment of Eni and its partners and of the unwavering support of the Government of the Republic of the Congo. Eni and the local partners shared work forces, know-how and technologies, ensuring additional revenues to the country while contributing to Europe’s energy security.”

The Congo LNG project, sanctioned in December 2022, came on stream after just 1 year, in line with the initial timeline: an achievement made possible by Eni's distinctive phased and parallelized approach and its highly efficient execution plan. The first LNG cargo is currently being loaded and will sail to Piombino’s regasification terminal, in Italy, in the coming days.

The project, situated within the Marine XII permit, will achieve a plateau gas liquefaction capacity of approximately 4.5 billion cubic meters per annum and will mark zero flaring from operated activities in country. The volumes will be marketed by Eni, strengthening and expanding the company’s LNG portfolio, and supporting efforts towards energy security and transition.

Eni is present in Congo since 1968 and is the only company active in the development of the country's gas resources: it currently supplies gas to the Centrale Électrique du Congo (CEC), which provides 70% of the country's power generation capacity. Eni is strongly committed to promoting the energy transition in the country through several initiatives, including the Oyo Center of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, promoted and supported by Eni and managed by the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Technological Innovation of the Republic of the Congo together with UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization). In addition, Eni is including Congo in the value chain of sustainable mobility through the production of agri-feedstock for biorefining, and promotes clean cooking initiatives, to reduce biomass consumption and the emissions associated with combustion.
