East and West Hub: oil reserves off the coast of Angola

The East Hub and West Hub, are located about 350 km north-west of the city of Luanda, in the Eni-operated Block 15/06. West Hub entered production at the end of 2014, while production at East Hub began in February 2017, five months ahead of schedule, giving it one of the best time-to-markets in the industry. Much of our focus in this area is developing offshore oil fields and the block has seen Eni's first work in the deep water off Angola’s coast. The first phase involves the development of six fields (Sangos, Cinguvu, Mpungi, Ochigufu and Vandumbu) in the West Hub, which will be linked by 31 subsea wells. Of these, 18 are producing and 13 injecting to the floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit Ngoma. For the East Hub area, development involves production in the fields of Cabaça South East and Cabaça Central UM8. These have 11 wells, six producing and five injecting, linked to FPSO Olombendo. Production comes from the West Hub and the East Hub projects that in 2020 produced 123 kboe/d (42 kboe/d net to Eni).

In January 2020 we started producing oil from the Agogo offshore deposit, located in Block 15/06 in Angolan waters, barely nine months after it was discovered, thanks to the operational synergies developed with the Floating Production Storage Offloading (FPSO) Ngoma. Start-up involved the drilling of the Agogo-1 well, which achieved a flow rate of around 10 thousand barrels of oil per day. In the same year, in February, we have successfully drilled Agogo-3, the second appraisal well of Agogo discovery, increasing by about 40% the estimate of oil in place, which is now of 1 billion barrels with further upside to be tested, and pave the way for its full field development with a third production hub.

During the 2020 the Block 15/06 exploration license was renewed for additional three years. The agreement will allow to assess the possible additional mineral potential of the area. Other development activities in the operated block concerned:
  • the completion of the subsea production and injection facilities at the Cabaça North & UM 4/5 project
  • studies for the full field development of the Agogo field
  • activities related to the Ndungu discovery development.
In April 2021 Eni made a new light oil discovery in the area. The well has been drilled on the Cuica exploration prospect located inside the Cabaça Development Area and close to the Armada Olombendo FPSO (East Hub). The discovery is based on the ILX_Infrastructure-led exploration strategy, which pursues exploration opportunities in proximity of existing infrastructures. We started production of the Cuica Field via the FPSO vessel in July 2021, just over 4 month from discovery.

In September 2021 Eni started production from Cabaça North, via the Armada Olombendo FPSO and through our Infrastructure-Led Exploration strategy. The Cabaça North development, with an expected peak production rate in the range of 15 kbopd, will increase and sustain the plateau of the vessel, a zero-discharge, zero-process flaring FPSO with an overall capacity of 100 kbopd. This is the second start-up achieved by Eni Angola in 2021, after the Cuica Early Production achieved in July. A third start-up is started in February 2022 with the Ndungu Early Production in the Western area of Block 15/06. The start-up of Ndungu EP is yet another example of how Eni Angola keeps creating value on Block 15/06 through its Infrastructure-Led Exploration strategy. Ndungu EP project, with an expected production rate in the range of 20,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd) will sustain the plateau of the Ngoma.

Other development activities in the operated Block 15/06 in 2021 concerned the Agogo Early Production Phase 2 development project with start-up of construction activities relating to the planned offshore facilities. The full field development of the Agogo project provides for the construction of an additional FPSO. Concept definition studies and FEED activity were completed and started up the activities for the assigning main contracts. On the non-operated blocks, development activities progressed in the Block 0. Other development activities concerned the FEED activity of the Punja project in the Block 3/05-A (Eni’s interest 12%).

December 8, 2014

Eni has started production of first oil from the West Hub Development Project in Block 15/06 in the Angolan Deep Offshore, approximately 350 kilometres northwest of Luanda and 130 kilometres west of Soyo.

The field is currently producing 45,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd) through the N’Goma FPSO, that reached Angola in July this year, with production ramp-up expected to reach a daily production of up to 100,000 bopd in the coming months. The start-up of the East Hub Development, expected in 2017, will raise overall production from Block 15/06 to 200,000 bpd.

Having won the international bid round in 2006, in Block 15/06 Eni drilled 24 exploration and appraisal wells, discovering over 3 billion barrels of oil in place and 850 million barrels of reserves. According to Eni, the discoveries were then developed quickly, achieving an industry-leading time to market of only 44 months from the Declaration of Commercial Discovery thanks to the application of a new modular development model. The West Hub Development entails the sequential start-up of the Sangos, Cinguvu, Mpungi, Mpungi North Area, Vandumbu e Ochigufu fields.

The company’ said in the press release that, “Eni will also continue its exploration programme in Block 15/06: potential discoveries tied in quickly and cost efficiently. A recent example is the Ochigufu discovery, which added 300 million barrels of oil in place and which will be tied in to the N’Goma FPSO within the next two years.”

Eni is operator of the Block 15/06 with a 35% stake and Sonangol EP is the Concessionaire. The other partners of the joint venture are Sonangol Pesquisa e Produção (35%), SSI Fifteen Limited (25%) and Falcon Oil Holding Angola SA (5%).

Eni has been present in Angola since 1980 with a daily production in 2013 of 87,000 barrels of oil equivalent.

Eni starts production of the Cuica field in the Eastern area of Block 15/06, deep offshore Angola

San Donato Milanese (Milan), 13 August 2021 – Eni started production of the Cuica Field, in Block 15/06 of the Angolan deep offshore, via the Armada Olombendo Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel on 30th July 2021, just over 4 month from discovery.

The Cuica field was discovered by the exploration well Cuica 1 in March 2021. It is located in a water depth of 500 meters, approx. 3 km from the Olombendo FPSO. The early production of the development, that will increase and sustain the Olombendo FPSO production plateau, includes an oil producer well and a water injection well, tied back subsea to the existing Cabaça North subsea production system, thus exploiting the full potential of available infrastructures in the area.

The start-up of production on the Cuica Field in Angola, just 4 months from the discovery, is yet another example of Eni’s Angolan and worldwide extraordinary exploration success, that, driven by the principle of Infrastructure Led Exploration (ILX) and combined with the application of an enhanced modular and streamlined development philosophy, is allowing Eni to translate exploration successes into production in the most efficient and effective way.

The Armada Olombendo FPSO has a production capacity of 100,000 barrels of oil per day and is designed to operate during her production life with zero discharge. Besides Cuica, whose production rate is in line with expectations, the Olombendo is now receiving and treating the production of Cabaça, Cabaça South East and UM8 fields for a total of 12 wells and 5 manifolds at a water depth ranging from 400 to 500 meters. The Olombendo FPSO will also receive production from the Cabaça North field in 4Q 2021.

Block 15/06 is operated by Eni Angola with a 36.84% share. Sonangol Pesquisa e Produção (36.84%) and SSI Fifteen Limited (26.32%) compose the rest of the Joint Venture. Further to block 15/06, Eni is operator of exploration blocks Cabinda North, Cabinda Centro, 1/14 and 28, as well as of the New Gas Consortium (NGC). In addition, Eni has stakes in the non-operated blocks 0 (Cabinda), 3/05, 3/05A, 14, 14 K/A-IMI, 15 and in Angola LNG.

Eni achieves start-up from Ndungu EP development project in the Western area of Block 15/06, deep offshore Angola

San Donato Milanese (Milan), 25 February 2022 – Eni started production from Ndungu Early Production (EP) development project, in Block 15/06 of the Angolan deep offshore, via the Ngoma Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel.

The start-up of Ndungu EP is yet another example of how Eni Angola, in full cooperation with Agência Nacional de Petróleo, Gás e Biocombustíveis (ANPG) and partners, keeps creating value on Block 15/06 through its Infrastructure-Led Exploration strategy, generating a pipeline of fast-track subsea tie-backs, thus maximizing the utilization of existing facilities in the area in a sustainable manner.

Ndungu Early Production project, with an expected production rate in the range of 20,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd), will sustain the plateau of the Ngoma, a 100 kbopd zero-discharge and zero-process flaring FPSO, upgraded in 2021 to minimize emissions, in line with Eni’s decarbonisation strategy to achieve net zero.

A further exploration and delineation campaign will be performed in the first half of 2022 with the aim to assess the full potential of the overall asset of Ndungu.

Ndungu EP is the third start-up achieved by Eni Angola in Block 15/06 in the last 7 months, after Cuica Early Production and Cabaca North Development Project.

Block 15/06 is operated by Eni Angola with a 36.84% share. Sonangol Pesquisa e Produção (36.84%) and SSI Fifteen Limited (26.32%) compose the rest of the Joint Venture. Further to Block 15/06, Eni is the operator of exploration Blocks Cabinda North, Cabinda Centro, 1/14 and 28, as well as of the New Gas Consortium (NGC). In addition, Eni has stakes in the non-operated Blocks 0 (Cabinda), 3/05, 3/05A, 14, 14 K/A-IMI, 15 and in the Angola LNG.
