Angola is a member of OPEC and the second largest oil producer in Sub-Saharan Africa, has proven itself to be one of the world’s oil exploration hotspots with production averaging 1.4 million barrels per day in 2018. The Angolan government has granted rights to conduct petroleum operations to international oil companies including BP, Chevron, Eni, ExxonMobil, Petrobras, Statoil and Total.

Large quantities of associated natural gas are produced as a result of this oil production. Historically natural gas was seen as a useless by-product as it was prohibitively expensive to harvest. However, with improved technologies natural gas now accounts for 22 percent of the world's energy consumption and demand is growing.

An environmentally-friendly and efficient energy source, natural gas is the cleanest-burning fossil fuel, producing lower levels of greenhouse gas emissions than fuels such as coal and oil. Natural gas is also one of the most economical energy sources. Fuels made from natural gas are used to power electric generators, heat buildings, run cars and can be used as a raw material in many consumer plastics products.

With an expected life of at least 30 years Angola LNG draws its gas supply from a diverse range of sources. The primary source was initially associated gas from offshore oil operations in Blocks 15, 17, and 18. This was followed by connecting Blocks 0 and 14, Block 31 and 32. Angola LNG will also develop and produce non-associated gas as needed from dedicated gas discoveries within Blocks 1 and 2.

Angola LNG’s use of associated gas as a primary feed source is unlike other LNG projects which tend to use non associated gas. As a result the plant significantly contributes to the elimination of gas flaring in Angola, allowing for the development of offshore oil reserves in an environmentally sustainable manner.

LNG Plant

Image

Angola LNG has built one of the world’s most modern LNG processing facilities. It is located 350km north of Luanda, the capital of Angola, and at the mouth of the Congo River on the Atlantic Ocean. The plant is located on a 240 hectare site on Kwanda, an island within the delta estuary of the Congo River, which was established as a supply and support base for Angola’s offshore oil and gas industry.

Soyo was chosen for its potential for future development and its proximity to the offshore oil fields from which natural gas is sourced for the plant. Environmental impact studies also concluded that building the plant in Soyo would have the least environmental and socioeconomic impact, which has been a keen concern throughout development of Angola LNG.

Natural gas reaches the plant via a network of pipelines and is first treated to remove contaminants including carbon dioxide, water and mercury. This process not only purifies the gas but also removes anything that would freeze and cause blockages in the plant during refrigeration.

Lighter gases, such as propane and butane, are extracted to be sold separately or used later in the refrigerant process. Treated gas is then chilled to approximately minus 160°C (-260°F) in successively colder heat exchangers that use propane, ethylene and methane as refrigerants to produce Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). This LNG is then pumped into insulated storage tanks before being exported by a fleet of long-term chartered ships to buyers around the world.

The Soyo plant is designed to process 1.1 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day and has the capacity to produce 5.2 million tons of LNG per annum – plus natural gas, propane, butane and condensate.

The plant represents an important step in the efficient use of Angola’s natural resources, and boasts a workforce which is now equipped with expertise in every facet of LNG production from plant construction, commissioning operations, and logistics.

The plant infrastructure includes storage tanks for LNG, propane, butane and condensate and an LNG loading jetty able to accommodate vessels up to 315m in length.

The production process is designed around a “two-train-in-one" reliability concept that allows the plant to continue operating at a reduced rate even when a compressor is offline, resulting in high plant availability.

PRODUCTS

Natural Gas is one of the principle sources of energy for many of our day-to-day needs and activities. Gas is first gathered from the offshore blocks and piped to the onshore processing plant where it is purified before being processed and stored.

This section provides an overview of some of the products Angola LNG produces from this vital gas.

LNG

Angola LNG has built one of the world’s most modern LNG processing facilities. In the first stage of the liquefaction process impurities such as water, oil, as well as other gases such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide are removed. The purification process is also set up to eliminate any trace amounts of mercury from the natural gas. Natural gas liquids such as propane and butane are also extracted at this stage. The purified gas is then cooled down in stages by heat exchangers until it is liquefied at approximately minus 160°C, forming a clear, colourless and non-toxic liquid – liquefied natural gas, or LNG. The LNG is then kept in insulated storage tanks until it is ready to be loaded and shipped.

LPG & Condensate

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) - propane or butane - is a flammable mixture of hydrocarbon gases used as a fuel in heating appliances and vehicles. LPG is removed from natural gas when it is being converted into LNG, and can provide an alternative to electricity and heating oil in rural areas where there is no access to piped natural gas.

LPG can be used as a power source for combined heat and power technologies (CHP). CHP is the process of generating both electrical power and useful heat from a single fuel source. This technology has allowed LPG to be used not just as fuel for heating and cooking, but also for electricity generation. LPG can also be used as a motor fuel and it often referred to as autogas or auto propane.

Condensate is the heaviest fraction of the natural gas mixture that can be used as gasoline or stream cracker feedstock, and is also extracted from the natural gas during the purification process to be sold and shipped to buyers.

Natural gas

Today Natural Gas is one of the principle sources of energy for many of our day-to-day needs and activities. It is a vital component of the world's supply of energy. Despite its importance, there are many misconceptions about natural gas. Natural gas is colourless, shapeless, and odourless in its pure form. Unlike other fossil fuels, natural gas is clean burning and emits comparatively low levels of potentially harmful by-products into the air. While natural gas is formed primarily of methane, it can also include ethane, propane, butane and pentane. Angola LNG will supply natural gas to the Angolan market to help meet local industrial and energy needs.

300TH LNG CARGO

Image

Angola LNG’s Sonangol Etosha vessel berthed at Soyo terminal on 23rd July to load the project’s 300th LNG cargo.

Angola LNG’s vision to be a reliable and competitive supplier, a strong community partner, and a role model for the economic development of Angola started back in 2013 when operations began. We have since delivered LNG cargoes safely to different markets around the world, as far west as Canada, as far east as Japan and to an array of markets in between.

Angola LNG initially started operations by supplying buyers exclusively through spot sales. Since then it has progressively built up a portfolio of mid-term sales comprised of a variety of different counterparties. Spot sales continue to be an important part of our portfolio. Angola LNG takes pride in its flexible and adaptable business model along with its associated implementing strategy that allows it to respond to the changing needs of the LNG Global market that constantly adapt to the current world socio-economic context and new market trends to meet future initiatives or developments.

We aim to maintain this vision for the future whilst delivering cargoes safely and reliably anywhere in the world.

The contracts follow the Final Investment Decision for the Quiluma and Maboqueiro gas project, the first non-associated gas project in Angola

Luanda, 11 August 2022 — Azule Energy, via its wholly owned subsidiaries Eni Angola Exploration B.V (Eni) and BP Exploration (Angola) Limited (bp), together with its Partners in the New Gas Consortium (NGC), Chevron’s subsidiary in Angola Cabinda Gulf Oil Company Limited (CABGOC), Sonangol P&P, and TotalEnergies, are pleased to announce the award of the main contracts for the development of the Quiluma and Maboqueiro (Q&M) fields.

This is Angola’s first non-associated gas development project.

The contracts for an overall value of around 1 billion US dollars were awarded to:
• Saipem for the Onshore Plant EPC Contract;
• Saipem for Quiluma Platform EPC Contract;
• JV Gruppo Antonini/Proger/Kerry Logistics for Maboqueiro Platform EPC Contract;
• Baker Hughes for the supply of Turbocompressors.

The Q&M project includes two offshore wellhead platforms, an onshore gas processing plant and a connection to the Angola LNG plant for the marketing of condensates and gas via LNG cargoes.

Project execution activities will start in 2022 with first gas planned for 2026 and an expected production of 330 mmscf/day at plateau (approximately 4 billion cubic meters/year).

Adriano Mongini, Azule Energy chief executive, said: “The signing of these contracts is an important milestone towards unlocking new undeveloped sources of energy, sustaining a reliable supply of gas to the Angola LNG plant, and enabling further development of local content capabilities”.

“The support provided by Angola’s Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas, as well as all the Ministries and the National Concessionaire (ANPG), has been essential in unlocking this new phase of the Angolan offshore gas development,” Mr. Mongini added.

The New Gas Consortium partners encompass Eni (25.6%, operator), CABGOC (31%), Sonangol P&P (19.8%), bp (11.8%) and TotalEnergies (11.8%). Azule Energy is the new 50/50 independent joint venture officially established on 1 August 2022, combining the bp and Eni Angolan businesses. Azule Energy is now Angola’s largest independent equity producer of oil and gas, holding 2 billion barrels of oil equivalent of net resources and growing to about 250,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day (boe/d) of equity production over the next 5 years. It holds stakes in 16 licenses (of which 6 are exploration blocks) and a participation in the Angola LNG JV. Azule Energy will also take over Eni’s share in Solenova, a solar company jointly held with Sonangol, and the collaboration in the Luanda Refinery.
