BPTT’s Cassia Compression project is on track, the company has announced.

The Cassia Compression project will enable BPTT to access and produce low pressure gas reserves from currently-producing fields in the Greater Cassia Area, maximizing recovery from these existing resources.

The project was sanctioned in 2018. It will involve the construction of a new platform, Cassia C, BPTT’s 16th offshore facility. McDermott International is the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) provider for the project. The topside and bridge are being fabricated in Altamira, Mexico and are 23% complete. The jacket and bridge landing frame are being fabricated at TOFCO, Trinidad and Tobago and is 43% complete.

“The Cassia Compression project is crucial to BPTT’s ability to meet its contractual arrangements over the long term. By keeping the project on track, we can ensure that we meet our commitments,” said Michael Daniel, Project General Manager, BPTT.

Gas production from the Greater Cassia Area will be routed to Cassia C for compression before being exported via the adjacent existing Cassia B platform. Cassia C will be located 57 kilometres off the south-east coast of Trinidad. The platform will have a throughput capacity of 1.2 billion standard cubic feet of gas a day (bcfd).

First gas from the facility is expected in 3Q 2021.The Cassia jacket is the latest of BPTT’s infrastructure to be built at TOFCO. Of the nine platforms that have been built at TOFCO, BPTT has accounted for six, starting with Cannonball to Juniper in 2017. This also includes the Mango and Cashima platforms which were fabricated simultaneously.

Daniel said: “Local fabrication has been a key feature of BPTT’s major projects since the construction of Cannonball in 2005. We have invested in eight major projects since 2005 with five platforms, one topside and now a jacket being fabricated right here in La Brea. That demonstrates BPTT’s commitment to ensuring that its business operations support the development of local skills and capabilities.”

BPTT’s Cassia Compression development will access 1 TCF of resources, according to Regional President Claire Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick was speaking during a tour of the TOFCO fabrication yard in La Brea by Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley on Friday July 19.

The jacket and bridge landing for Cassia C, BPTT’s next platform, are currently being fabricated at TOFCO. The topsides and bridge link are being constructed in Altamira, Mexico. They are part of the Cassia Compression development which will enable BPTT to access and produce low pressure gas reserves from currently-producing fields in the Greater Cassia Area, maximizing recovery from these existing resources.

The project was sanctioned in 2018 and is expected to come online in 2021. McDermott International is the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) provider for the project.

Both the jacket and topside are on schedule.

The Cassia C jacket is the latest of BPTT’s infrastructure to be fabricated at TOFCO. Six out of BPTT’s 15 offshore platforms were constructed at TOFCO, representing about US$350 million of investment.

“That is something that we at BPTT are proud of and I believe that it is something everyone at TOFCO should be proud of as well. This demonstrates our commitment to local content and developing local capability. We value our partnership with McDermott and TOFCO and see it as one of the industry’s real success stories,” Fitzpatrick said.

The Cassia Compression project fits into BPTT’s Area Development plan which outlines the direction and pace of the company’s activities to develop our resources in the Columbus Basin. The plan includes a combination of exploration, development projects and activities focused on maximizing production from existing fields.

Fitzpatrick said that there is increasing competition to access funding for projects and therefore local fabrication must remain competitive.

Fitzpatrick said: “The key to continued development and success of the local fabrication industry is continued investment in developing skills and focusing on the productivity of the workforce. Trinidad has had a good track record and can capitalize on other opportunities by focusing on being globally competitive.”

26 July 2021

bp Trinidad and Tobago LLC (bpTT) has announced the installation of the topsides of its Cassia Compression (Cassia C) platform off Trinidad’s east coast.

The installation marks a significant milestone in the Cassia C project which will enable bpTT to access and produce low pressure gas reserves from currently-producing fields in the Greater Cassia area, thereby maximizing recovery from these existing resources.

The Cassia C topsides were fabricated at the Altamira fabrication yard, Mexico and arrived in Trinidad and Tobago on July 15. Michael Daniel, Project General Manager, bpTT said: “We have marked an important step in the Cassia Compression project with the installation of the topsides. This is a great achievement for the teams in Mexico and T&T which had to work through challenges brought about by COVID-19. The Cassia Compression project will be a major component of improving our production deliverability and the installation of the topsides brings us one step closer to first gas.”

The jacket, or legs, and bridge landing frame of the Cassia C platform were built at TOFCO’s facility in Trinidad and Tobago and were installed in February 2020.
The next step in the project will be hook up and commissioning of the Cassia C platform.

Gas production from the Greater Cassia Area will be routed to the Cassia C platform for compression before being transported via the adjacent existing Cassia B platform. Cassia C will be located 57 kilometres off the south-east coast of Trinidad. The platform will have a throughput capacity of 1.2 billion standard cubic feet of gas a day (bcfd).

First gas from the platform is expected in 2022. Production from Cassia C will be applied to existing contractual obligations.

Natural gas has a key role to play in the energy transition and the Cassia Compression project represents bpTT’s commitment to running a gas business that is safe, reliable and resilient.

The Cassia C development is progressing towards first gas planned for the fourth quarter of this year.

The development is currently in the final commissioning phase which is the last phase before achieving first gas which is planned for the fourth quarter of this year.

The jacket, or stand, was built at TOFCO (Trinidad Offshore Fabricators) and installed in 2020. The topside was built in Altamira, Mexico and was installed in 2021. The platform reached mechanical completion in April of this year, which means that all of the components have been installed and ready for the commissioning phase.

Project general manager, Trinidad, Michael Daniel said: “It’s great to see Cassia C progressing through this last phase of delivery. Natural gas from the Cassia compression project is important to bpTT and Trinidad and Tobago and our business is working hard to bring the facility online.
