SHI announced that it has received Approval in Principle for an FLNG floater independent model(hereinafter 'MLF-N', Multi-purpose LNG Floater-Nearshore) from DNV at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC 2023) in Houston on the 1st of May.
MLF-N is the SHI's strategic product, considering markets looking for a faster and more economical FLNG models than onshore plants.
SHI has standardized its ship model and specifications by implying its various FLNG EPC experiences and technologies.
MLF-N standardizes shapes of LNG cargos and widths and heights of hulls surrounding them, so the cargos' capacity could be easily extended from 180,000m3 to 245,000m3.
It is also designed with a stable structure to support about 50,000 tons of upper plant facilities including natural gas liquefaction modules.
In addition, it standardizes optimal specifications of major equipment mounted on the hull, drastically shortening an engineering period.
SHI is applying some of the designs of MLF-N to Petronas FLNG, which it recently has won, and is actively doing MLF-N business activities to win overseas ongoing gas field development projects.

FLNG, floating liquefied natural gas production facility
- FLNG is a composite offshore plant that can mine natural gas in the sea and then refine, liquefy, store and unload it. It is called the "Offshore LNG Plant."
- SHI has won four out of five new orders for FLNG vessels placed worldwide, showing unrivaled competitiveness in the field, and is expecting additional orders as it has participated in Feed work of a number of FLNG projects currently under discussion.
- Shell Prelude, built by Samsung Heavy Industries in 2017, is the world's largest existing FLNG. It is weighing 260,000 tons and reaches a length of 488 meters, which is about the size of Lotte World Tower (555m) in Jamsil, Seoul.
