[Guyana] Liza-1 - FPSO Liza Destiny

SBM Offshore starts the Liza Destiny FPSO conversion

The arrival of the Bahamas-flagged Tina Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), ultimately destined for the Liza Phase 1 project in Guyana, marks the start of the Liza Destiny FPSO conversion phase. To meet the project’s requirements, the conversion includes upgrade work on the hull and integration of topsides, which is being undertaken in Singapore at Keppel’s shipyard.

“With the arrival of the tanker we now begin in earnest the construction phase of the journey that SBM Offshore is on. We will leverage our in-depth experience with over 34 FPSO projects to date. Our objective is to safely deliver the Liza FPSO in partnership with our client and the experienced team at Keppel by working together as one team. SBM is proud to play its part for this major project by laying the foundation for the first FPSO for our client’s offshore development in Guyana,” says Bernard van Leggelo, SBM Offshore FPSO Managing Director.

The FPSO is designed to produce up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day, it will have associated gas treatment capacity of circa 170 million cubic feet per day and water injection capacity of circa 200,000 barrels per day. The converted VLCC FPSO will be spread moored in water depth of 1,525 meters and will be able to store 1.6 million barrels of crude oil.

The Liza Destiny is expected to arrive in Guyana for hook up and commissioning before first oil in 2020.

Liza Destiny FPSO begins her voyage to Guyana

The Liza Destiny FPSO is currently sailing to Guyana, having recently departed from Keppel shipyard in Singapore. This key milestone follows a record turnaround time of just over 20 months for its construction phase by SBM Offshore – including module construction at nearby Dyna-Mac yard.

“The safe and on-time departure of Liza Destiny represents a great achievement for the project team. This first vessel constructed for Guyana has benefitted from the team’s vast experience and expertise for the execution of such large capacity FPSOs, as well as the added value of our sub-contractors. We wish her and her crew a safe voyage,” says Severine Baudic, Managing Director Floating Production Solutions.

Following the successful EPC phase, the project team handed over to SBM Offshore’s Operations team.

“We are happy to welcome Liza Destiny FPSO into SBM Offshore’s fleet. We know her well, having been involved from the initial phases of her design and construction, ensuring that the FPSO benefits from the know-how of over 320 years of cumulative operations experience. We look forward to cooperating closely with our client, ExxonMobil, to ensure that the start-up is a success, in line with their plan,” says Oivind Tangen, Managing Director – Operations.

Once the FPSO arrives at the Liza field in Guyanese waters it will be hooked up to the subsea system, allowing the next phase of operations to start.

July, 2019 Liza Destiny FPSO departs from Singapore where the conversion of the hull, as well as the construction and integration of the topsides, took place. The voyage to Guyana will take less than two months.

Editor’s notes
  • The FPSO is designed to produce up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day. It will have associated gas treatment capacity of circa 170 million cubic feet per day and water injection capacity of circa 200,000 barrels per day. The converted VLCC FPSO will be spread moored in water depth of 1,525 meters and will be able to store 1.6 million barrels of crude oil.
  • The Liza field is located in the Stabroek block, which covers almost 27,000 square kilometers, circa 200 kilometers offshore Guyana. Esso Exploration and Production Guyana Limited is the operator and holds a 45 percent interest in the Stabroek block. Hess Guyana Exploration Ltd. holds a 30 percent interest, and CNOOC Nexen Petroleum Guyana Limited holds a 25 percent interest.
  • SBM Offshore announced in June 2017 the award of contracts for phase 1 of the ExxonMobil Liza project in Guyana. Under these contracts, SBM Offshore will construct, install, lease and operate a floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO).
  • The Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) ‘Tina’ was selected by SBM Offshore for the conversion. The conversion phase began in November 2017 with the tanker arrival at Keppel shipyard as announced Nov 14, 2017.

SBM Offshore signed a 10-year Operations and Maintenance Enabling Agreement for its Guyana FPSO fleet with ExxonMobil Guyana

02 May 2023

SBM Offshore is pleased to announce it has signed a 10-year Operations and Maintenance Enabling Agreement with Esso Exploration & Production Guyana Ltd (aka “ExxonMobil Guyana”) for the Operations and Maintenance of FPSOs Liza Destiny, Liza Unity, Prosperity and ONE GUYANA. This framework agreement establishes the new terms related to the operations of the Guyana FPSO fleet for a period of 10 years up to 2033. The lease terms and durations remain the same for all units, with 10 years lease for FPSO Liza Destiny and up to 2 years lease for FPSOs Liza Unity, Prosperity and ONE GUYANA after which the FPSOs’ ownership will transfer to the client. This contract supports SBM Offshore’s long-term business vision in Guyana enabling the Company to perform local and sustainable investments in people and infrastructure as well as to deploy its digital and operational technologies to the Guyana fleet. The estimated impact on the revenue backlog is around US$3 billion based on various operating and maintenance assumptions.

SBM Offshore will operate the units through an Integrated Operation Model, which encompasses an organization model including seconding ExxonMobil Guyana employees in some key onshore and offshore positions. This model will combine SBM Offshore and ExxonMobil Guyana’s experience and resources to increase team efficiency and foster synergies between the two companies.

Bruno Chabas, CEO of SBM Offshore commented:

“We are very pleased with the contract concluded with ExxonMobil Guyana leveraging both companies’ recognized operating excellence. This contract capitalizes on our developments in Guyana to date, positioning the Company for long-term operations in the country. This Integrated Operation Model is the first of its kind in the industry and extends our relationship with ExxonMobil Guyana by integrating further our teams. We believe it is the optimal solution to achieve excellence in the operation of Guyanese assets bringing value to all stakeholders and setting a new performance benchmark for the industry.”
