Yinson Production-Sumitomo’s FPSO Anna Nery Achieves First Oil

11 MAy 2023

Yinson Production (“YP”), together with its project partner Sumitomo Corporation (“Sumitomo”), are pleased to announce that FPSO Anna Nery has achieved first oil on 7 May 2023 following a successful 72-hour testing. This marks the commencement of the firm charter for a period of 25 years, until 2048.

The delivery of the asset is a laudable achievement amid challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic and disruptions to the global supply chain. FPSO Anna Nery is YP’s first operational asset in Brazil. YP is currently also constructing two more Brazil-bound assets, which are both on track for completion in 2024.

Letters of Intent for the FPSO Anna Nery project were awarded to YP by Petrobras in October 2019, followed by firm contracts execution in March 2020. In April 2020, Sumitomo participated in the project with a 25% stake. FPSO Anna Nery is operating at the Marlim Field located in the eastern part of the Campos Basin, about 150 km offshore Rio de Janeiro.

Chief Executive Officer Flemming Grønnegaard said that the achievement was immensely meaningful for the many parties involved who had worked hard to keep the project on schedule. He commented: “Every challenge faced during construction was met with unwavering energy and passion of the people involved. The excellent teamwork – between YP’s project and corporate teams, project partner Sumitomo, contractors, classification society, sub-contractors, and banking partners – was the most significant driver leading to the project’s success. We are honoured to contribute to Brazil’s local energy landscape through the provision of affordable and reliable energy to its economy and communities.”

Project Manager Scott Bendiksen said that the FPSO Anna Nery project had also maintained Zero Lost Time Injuries over 17.9 million man-hours during the construction. He commented: “We are proud to demonstrate YP’s expertise and commitment to safety and excellence throughout this project, as well as our tenacity to innovate solutions to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges. Our operations team based in Rio de Janeiro has taken over the day-to-day operations of FPSO Anna Nery and we have every confidence that we will achieve an excellent uptime and safety track record for our client.”

Sumitomo’s General Manager of the Energy Department, Wataru Sato, commented: “We would like to express our sincere appreciation to all contributors, including ANP, Petrobras, the lenders, COSCO shipyard, BrasFELS shipyard and our strong operator, YP, for their dedication and hard work on the achievement of first oil. We are confident that FPSO Anna Nery will perform well in the Marlim Field and contribute to Brazil’s local economy and communities. Sumitomo is honoured to be part of YP’s first FPSO project in Brazil.”

"The Anna Nery FPSO is part of the revitalization of the fields of the Campos Basin. The project is responsible for bringing even more value to a basin whose production is very important for the country, as well as the technological and operational learning we have obtained in it," said Carlos José do Nascimento Travassos, Petrobras' Director of Production Development.
